From the Beginning, is a painting series on paper on board and Mylar. This work references the five elements and is informed by Sacred Geometry and the forms know as Platonic Solids. In my paintings I investigate what I see as the intrinsic formal beauty of these shapes and their metaphysical/metaphorical properties - the "Platonic Ideal" from which the visible world derives. This work is a response to metaphysical studies and is also associated with my Egyptian travels.
I am interested in how geometry, personal symbolic imagery and high colour interface. My work addresses the relationship of fluid organic forms with the straight lines of geometric structure, solidity and transparency, and the apparent illusion of spatial dimension on a flat surface. I have translated the five platonic solids into transparent geometric shapes - showing their dimensionality.
My working process is a multi-layered approach. The first layer is a coloured ground forming the base for the next layer of intuitive gestural imagery, informed by the patterns and structures of oceanic life forms found in reef waters. Water themes have been a part of my work for a number of years. Here the imagery has become abstracted to represent the primordial metaphysical beginnings from which existence arises - matter and form emerging from the void.
