This series of work consists of 12 visually interconnected pieces. It can be exhibited as one unit or as dyptichs. The medium is chalk pastel on black Arches paper.
My intention with this work is to allude to the many possibilities of the element of water - a place of creation, information and transformation. This imagery recalls the principle of "as Above so Below", where the primeval waters of creation mirror the images of cosmic creation - of flowing solar gases and star formations.
In my work the element of water is used as a reference point and a metaphoric place of creation, the source of the imagery is derived from the lifeforms living in reef waters. These paintings explore the use of patterning and high colour found there. One concept of interest to me, is that on reefs, intense colour and patterning may act as a form of communication. Also of interest is the idea of transparent layers and the illusion of spatial depths conveyed by water.
