Shape Shifters

My work is an inner directed reply to my interests and experiences. It references an interplay of ideas about Geometry, Metaphysics, Geology, the Cosmos and Ancient Cultures. Shape Shifters – a series of shaped paintings evolved from a previous series – Shift and Float. The work references the transformative properties of crystals and stones and their ability to shift energies and awareness. My aim is to evoke the same properties for viewers.

The concerns of my work centre on the notion of impermanence. This work deals with the attributes of impermanence - time, change and transformation. Time is explored in the implied movement of the interconnected shaped forms...and the layers of time to complete this work. Change is evident in the evolution of colour, line and spacial dynamics . Viewing the work offers the possibility of transformation .

Thematically I explore the concept of minerals – eg crystals and stones as containers and conduits of energies. Metaphorically each painting represents a unique combination of stones referencing metaphysical energies. These combinations were chosen by resonance with the stones – a process used by Shamans and Visionaries.

Each painting is inspired by the unfolding, geometric growth and transformation of crystalline structures growing within the earth. The minerals are affected by the pressures of the elements - gases, water, etc and the ordered atomic arrangements shift to create new ones. I see these works as fundamental landscapes – formed of the building blocks of creation - geometry. My working process is intuitive, multilayered and open ended. I am intriquiged by the emotive potential of colour - the shifts between 2d and 3d space – how space can twist, expand and collapse and paint application - gestural and flat surfaces. Formally the shaped format speaks to my interest in paintings more as objects which impact wall space in a different way than conventional formats.

Part of my practice has been to allow myself to be directed by the work in progress - the mineral energies. The pieces have been revised and repainted many times over a period of time. It is my intent that the work opereates on all levels - emotional, physical and spiritual.

The assymetrical, uncertain balance of these paintings reflects my personal sense of trying to find some balance within impermanence - a place that is our permanent human condition
